Jon made Regional Orchestra

WOOHOO!

Congratulations Jonathan Hooper for making the Regional Orchestra.!!!! WAY TO GO!

We've been working for months getting ready for these tryouts that were held this last Saturday and low and behold he made it! Just for your information, Jon, who is my oldest grandson and one of my private violin students is a Freshman and was competing against Sophmores, Juniors and Seniors in High School. I don't know the High Schools that are in his region yet. "He's the Man" as he calls himself... btw he also is great in sports!

A Thought...

At school I am teaching my first grade student songs about weather for their Musical Feb 26th. I even made a PowerPoint with all the words along with pictures to help the kids learn the words and get the idea of the weather "Stuff" we are singing about. Well, the program starts off with a really cool song where the kids will be weather announcers and will call off "weather" words. The songs kind of go in this order: storms, rain, snow, wind, rainbow, sun and then we sing a "cool" song called "The Water Cycle" tying it all together. There are a total of 11 songs and two speech pieces and still is under 30 minutes. The music is very appropriate and fun because they are learning about the water cycle and weather in their regular classes. I found music recordings for all the songs we are singing except two, so I used my Finale music writing program to make accompaniments for the songs and put them all on a CD. One song I wrote music for was, "I Can Sing a Rainbow." Unlike the one on the play list for this blog sung by Delta Good(?), I have beautiful harp and string music as the background with bell accent towards the end and it sounds so sweet with the angel children's voices singing it.

Well, here is the story...

As one first grade class was singing "I Can Sing a Rainbow" I was informed by a little girl sitting next to me that "Parker" was crying. Mind you we are sitting with the lights off to watch the PowerPoint pictures as we sing and he was in front of the projection table with the projector so I didn't see the commotion on my own. I stopped the music and saw the most pathetic sobbing little boy with two little girls and a little boy trying to console the little guy. I asked him to come to me, gave him a hug and asked him, "Can you tell me what is the matter?" He was sobbing!! "Are you hurt?" I asked? "No!" he shook his head. I squeezed him a little tighter and asked, "Is the music making you cry?" He looked at me with the tears running down his cheek, and he whimpered... "Yes, my grandma." "It reminds you of your Grandma?" I asked. "Yes, she died.".... I asked. "I guess you loved your Grandma?" and with that he nodded his head, yes.

Oh, how that wretched at my heart. With all the tender feelings I have for my Mom, I said a few things to him about how lucky we are to have such wonderful Grandmas in our lives. And then I said, "I bet your Grandma is so happy to know that you love her too." He slowly calmed down, and then we sang some high energy songs and he did leave my class with a smile on his face.

The end result is ... I was kind of worried that my accompaniment would not go over with the kids because it is not high tech (one cannot get high tech on this music writing program) and it is one song they all seem to really like to sing. I guess I am doing something right!

It is a New Year

Even though I thought I posted my last post after midnight of 2009 it still registered as 2008 so here is my official first post of this year.

It is January 2, 2009 and I thought I would share just a few thoughts for the new year.....

I wonder what will lie ahead this year?
Last year I had moments of real anxiety and hardships and despite all of the unfortunate things bearing on my soul, I did find happiness and joy and peace.
I look over all the things that have happened in my life and all I can say is that I am happy to be ALIVE! I know that my Redeemer lives and that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me. Yes, He loves Me! Insignificant me! This has been proven to me time and time again and I cannot deny it! And though I am so tenderhearted today, I know without a shadow of a doubt that I am a Child of God and He loves me. Believe it or not, he loves me too! I hope and pray that I can live up to the measure of what I need to do to stay close to Him and live with him someday.

I am thankful for a Family. ALL OF THEM! A Family that is not perfect but who are striving to live good lives in spite of their imperfections. I know, because I know that I am not by any means perfect!
I am thankful for a job that I actually love... I love to teach and I love music, how can I go wrong with that combination?
I am thankful for the church and for all the truths I know because of it. I just need to strive to do my best to be better.
I am thankful for a living Prophet and his guidance
I am thankful for a kind bishop and hometeacher
I am thankful that I can share my talents with others and that I can lift others to be able to love the work of the Lord as much as I do.
I am thankful for dear friends who sometimes just share a bit of heaven with me.
I love the tender moments when things are just right and I can feel that peace from up above.
Sometimes I get so sad and lonely for something I cannot have in this life, so I try to strive to do the best I can in this life to be happy no matter what the circumstances are. And when I am not happy I will seek help to get that way again. I'm trying to set new goals to strive forward, to change the circumstances that I can and when I cannot, then I need to live with an attitude of happiness and peace for I know God lives and He always watches over us and when we ask for His help, He is there one way or another to give us peace in our hearts..
Over this past holiday I have been compiling a musical for the 1st grade classes at school called "All About Weather", (Well maybe I'll need to come up with a better title than that!!! of course ideas are welcome by anyone who is not afraid to share comment on my blog, but who reads my blog anyway!). Some of my favorite songs are "Zippadee Doo Dah," "I’m Singing in the Rain," and "Sing a Rainbow." It is just too bad that I cannot include some Primary songs that I think would be so wonderful like, “I Know Heavenly Father Loves Me" or “Skies Are Fair Above Us” for they all talk about weather and our Heavenly Father. Often times after a storm in our lives there is a beautiful colorful rainbow and rays of sunshine that come from the sky that are provided by our Heavenly Father who reminds us of all the good things to hope for and so we know that there should be "sunshine in our soul." He Loves us!

So many times this year I have wanted to jump up and share my testimony at church only to just stay seated in my choir seat. Maybe I just need to share. We will see…
